EXIF and IPTC metadata contained within image files created by digital cameras,
a brief introduction

Following on from recent forum discussions about photography, some of you might find this interesting.
JPEG (.jpg) files, ie. the image files obtained from modern digital cameras, contain a lot of detailed information about the image itself and the camera settings that were used to capture the image.
This intrinsic information is known as EXIF ( EXchangeable Image File ) metadata.
As well as EXIF metadata, there is provision for inserting customised info known as IPTC ( International Press Telecommunications Council ) photo metadata.
The principal difference between EXIF and IPTC metadata is whilst EXIF metadata fields are inherently "filled in", with IPTC the fields are inherently blank and you key in the relevant details. Once written, these details also become part of the image file.
Some of this information can be very handy if you're compiling a catalogue or album.
Being a standardised format it's easy to arrange into a neat detail summary either manually ( see example at bottom of page ) or using a program like jalbum.
From a copyright protection point of view, EXIF and IPTC metadata are of limited usefulness by virtue of the fact that both can be modified by a simple copy / paste and lost or removed quite easily.

All the following stuff relates to using irfanview.
You can get the latest version here and the plug-ins here

irfanview i button With a picture from your digital camera open in irfanview, ( latest version is 4.28 BTW ) if you have an earlier version uninstall it and install 4.28 and the plug-ins ), clicking on the "i" button shown above will display the image properties popup shown here. ----->

Note the filename here is just an example I've used, if you try this, the filename will likely be "DSC....", "PA....", etc depending on the make / model of your camera.
image properties

If you click on the button the EXIF info popup will appear, shown here. ----->

Note: the text box is real and scrollable :-)
All the information shown in this popup is written to the image file by your camera automatically.
Some of this info is used by programs like irfanview, paintshop, etc to identify the characteristics of the image file.
In irfanview for example, look at the bar at the bottom of the window, you'll see ( among other things ) the date and time which is obtained from the EXIF info.

If you click on the button the info can then be pasted into notepad et al allowing you to select what you want to keep which can then be formatted and saved.

If you clicked on the button the IPTC information popup will appear, shown here. ----->

All the fields will be blank allowing you to enter your own details. Stepping through the "Caption", "Keywords", Categories", "Credits", "Origin" and "Options" tags allows you to enter more info than you'd probably care to bother with :-)
If you can't figure out what the button does you're in desperate need of help LOL
